Whether you are a gay person who loves the Glinda/Elphaba relationship, or someone with no ties whatsoever to this context, it’s clearly been made for anyone to enjoy and feel connected, and will continue to for generations to come. A love triangle where they’re all gay! But it didn’t go that way, which I find weirdly refreshing.

It is true love, which is probably why people are shipping it. After years of readers sensing some romantic tension between Elphaba and Glinda in the book, including through the characters sharing a kiss in one moment, Maguire said this to Them in 2024:

That was intentional, and it was modest and restrained and refined in such a way that one could imagine that one of those two young women had felt more than the other and had not wanted to say it.

There are so many gays in this cast! The movie’s “found family” story has resonated with queer audiences for decades, especially before there were actual queer characters anywhere to be found in media. Let’s get into it, because it’s an important piece of its legacy.

The Wizard Of Oz Has Long Been Thought Of As Queer-Coded

You can’t really talk about Wicked without going way back in time and starting with The Wizard of Oz.

What we need is a dignified heroine willing to sacrifice her personal desires for the benefit of the collective — and that’s exactly what Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba delivers. And yet, when she performed, she exhibited this level of authentic emotion,” she developed such a prominent following of gay fans who could identify with her struggles, and came in droves to support her during her career.

The Wicked Book Makes The Romantic Undertones To Glinda And Elphaba’s Relationship Canon

With all that history in context, let’s move over to Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch (which became a series of four books).

“I reached a point where I thought, Fuck this, I’d much prefer to hold my boyfriend’s hand in public or be able to put my own face picture on Tinder and not be so concerned about that than getting a part.”

In my professional opinion, Fiyero being played by a gay man only adds to my headcanon that Elphaba and Glinda are in a relationship with each other and Fiyero is merely their platonic but perhaps toxically enmeshed gay boy best friend.

He swoons over Fiyero! And though I Google “Ariana Grande bisexual” at least quarterly, there are no updates on that front either. Now that is a love worth waiting for. It’s a classic-period to every fan of cinema, but it also holds a lot of significance to the queer community.

No, there’s not explicitly any LGBTQ+ characters in the musical fantasy, but there’s something about Dorothy leaving her black and white world to go “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” that does make it explicitly queer coded.

I am obsessed with Colman’s love story with his husband, Raúl Domingo, who he has been married to since 2014. Basically, I walked into the movie saying, “If they don’t kiss, I’m leaving.” But they didn’t kiss and I didn’t leave, so let’s queer a few things up. In the film, the relationship between the two feels like it could easily veer into classic enemies-to-lovers territory.

Elphaba and Glinda hate each other, they love each other, they dance awkwardly, and there are meaningful glances. One that chooses love for the people — and all sentient animals — over romance between individuals. Yes. Is the author of the original book a gay man who has said in interviews that fantasy novels are important for young queers and intimated that Glinda may not be as straight as she seems?

The actress who plays Nessarose (and has unfortunately had to call out ableist comments about her character) has been providing some queer disability visibility on the Wicked press tour as an out wheelchair user.
