If you’re Googling this blog, that’s a sign in itself.

Could we take just a moment, then, and have some compassion for Underwood and other LGBT people who need a minute (or more) to come out? It was gay.

It was a quick, harmless jab, like so many other verbal jabs of the time, but this one left internal bleeding that took far too long to heal.

I spent too long obsessing over the way I walked.

It feels like I present myself to the world as a straight, cis man. It means you’re starting to explore who you really are, and that’s powerful.

Let’s talk about some real signs that you might be questioning your sexuality and how to move through that journey with confidence and compassion.

What Does It Mean to Be Questioning Your Sexuality?

When you question your sexuality, you actively explore who you feel emotionally, physically, or romantically drawn to, or maybe all three.

• It doesn’t mean you have to label yourself.
• It doesn’t mean you’re gay, straight, or anything in between.

It simply signifies you’re figuring out your sexuality in your own way.

This can feel confusing, especially if you’ve grown up in a space where straightness was the default.

I don’t mean to imply that as kids or teens we consciously choose to have an easier heterosexual/cisgender identity. Repeatedly asking Am I Gay? As your questions deepen, you may start to notice more than just curiosity, especially in the way you connect emotionally with others

People infer things about others based on their appearance, mannerisms, speech patterns, interests, and other behavior.

Despite the way I view myself, my students often think I am gay.

I used to always start the year by allowing students to ask me questions about myself. Teens may not have even had sex yet, but their identities have typically already been formed and imprinted as straight. You’re Emotionally Drawn to Same-Gender People

Even if it’s not romantic or sexual at first, feeling a deep emotional connection or admiration for same-gender people might spark self-reflection.

“How could he not know he was gay?” “Why would he pretend to be heterosexual in such a public way?” “Leading everyone on like that shows he has no integrity or sense of honor.”

People mistakenly think that it has to be easier to come out today because of all the media stars who are out, such as Ellen DeGeneres, Rachel Maddow, Pete Buttigieg, and Anderson Cooper, and because of programs like Will & Grace. But in Underwood’s case, it appears that he maintained the self-illusion of being straight well into his 20s.

Every year I have students come to me when they do not feel comfortable talking to anyone else.

This often includes LGBT students, but I recently spoke to a student that identifies as a straight cis male that felt he could not be himself because he did not want to be called gay.

He wanted to do simple things like paint his nails and wear makeup.

Likely because of the grooming of children and expectations of the adult world around him, he was 29 years old by the time he announced who he really was. I didn’t enjoy fighting. When a little girl or boy develops a crush on their teacher of the opposite sex, and maybe wants to give them a Valentine, our reaction is, “Aww, that’s so cute.” But if they are of the same gender it’s a different story.
