Liza Minnelli has layers.

Liza married four times. But still, despite Garland's early death, the existing parallels between mother and daughter are uncannily striking.

Both had to grow up fast and be breadwinners for their families.

At two and a half, Judy made her first appearance on stage in a "Jingle Bells" Christmas performance at her father's movie theater along with her two older sisters.

She was terribly insecure about her appearance, and being surrounded by beauties like Lana Turner, Elizabeth Taylor, Ava Gardner and Greta Garbo didn't help. Later Liza's fourth husband, the late David Gest, was rumored to be gay, although he denied it. Shameful examples of how graceless, creepy journalists would treat her gives us a sharp look at the realities of being a woman who has been in the spotlight since she was a child.

All is not revealed in this documentary but it is but the antipasto to Liza’s recently-announced memoir, due for publication in 2026.

The most moving parts of the movie aren’t revelations about her mom, Judy Garland, or her father, the great director/choreography Vincent Minnelli, or the 4 husbands (2 were gay). Liza first got married to Peter Allen on March 3, 1967. Instead, this cinematic work is filled with exquisite footage of Liza paying homage to her Queer collaborators and doing something most documentaries about Divas never dare to do: dole out a serious reclamation of music history.
