Lesbian[edit]
- Patty Bouvier - Formerly closeted, as she appeared (enclosed) on a float in a gay pride parade, chanting "We're gay! Is currently and unhappily married to a young woman, but tries very hard to win Smithers in a bet. Smith actor at the Bi-Mon-Sci-Fi-Con - Implied that he wanted to molest Bart Simpson.[34] It is important to note, however, that tendencies toward paedophilia (even same-sex paedophilia) don't automatically equate to homosexuality.
- Rod Flanders and Todd Flanders - Shown to be gay in the future; Ned feels that he owes Bart a favor (and agrees to lend Bart money) because Bart hasn't outed them.
If non-binary had been a thing back then, I’d have tried it on like a second skin.
But Marcie is the one I related to most. There is a lot of ambiguity surrounding the issue of Karl's sexual orientation, and not enough information to definitively settle the question.[31] A stronger hint at Karl's possible orientation is dropped when Karl is seen supporting Moe's campaigning as gay while running for city council, but there's still no overt indication of his status.[24]
- Sea Captain - In The Simpsons: Tapped Out, he implied that he is homosexual.
But in absorbing a lot of this stuff, something leaped out at me that I can't push aside: Peppermint Patty --- formally known as Patricia Reichardt --- should be bisexual.
Peppermint Patty & Marcie are one of two pairs of children's characters (the other being Bert & Ernie of Sesame Street) thought of as queer with varying degrees of seriousness. It's generally taken as read, just a tacit fact, and Melanie Gillman & Molly Ostertag wrote wonderful stories exploring the pair in last year's Peanuts: A Tribute To Charles M.
Schulz.
Besides Marcie's constantly calling Patty "Sir," there's the fact that the two are almost never seen apart. Said that women disgusted him, but appeared to be physically attracted to Abe.[37]
- Tab Spangler - Counselor at the Serenity Ranch fat camp. He and his workers are all gay, and at breaks they turn the mill into a gay nightclub.[18]
- Grady Little and Julio Franco - Were a couple when Homer roomed with them.[19] They evidently broke up sometime after that, as Julio later married Thad.[2] Later still, Julio and Thad separated,[20] and Julio and Grady got back together.[21]
- Stuart - Hangs out in the Gay village and knows Waylon Smithers, Jr.
quite well. In fact, I remember when she was Harold Schwartzbaum."[73] This is highly questionable, however, due to her and Tim having a daughter together,[74] as well as a flashback clearly depicting Helen as a young girl.[75]
- Waylon Smithers, Jr. - Smithers hinted at possible transgender feelings when Marge was selling prescription medication at a garage sale and he bought bottles of estrogen for "a friend...
It was about recognition.
I saw myself in both of them.
Peppermint Patty was all sporty, scruffy, and misunderstood. That's just common sense.
.
Among them was Patty Bouvier.[49]Karl also patted Homer on the behind after giving him a pep talk, but in the context of the situation it could easily be considered a comradely gesture rather than an affectionate one. The possibilities write themselves.
We're finally seeing the walls drop around including LGBT+ characters in children's programming, but there's still a long way to go.
One blatant example occurred when Smithers booted up his home computer and an animation of Mr. Burns appeared, saying (in obviously cobbled-together sound clips), "Hello, Smithers. That was me. Ned states that he is not homosexual, to which Captain McCallister responds, "Neither am I, wink-wink. When Abe and young Homer took Bongo (Homer's childhood dog) to their house, Abe thought that Viola's wife was her husband, annoying both women.[7]
However, due to the future setting, this information should be considered non-canon.[35]
They made a great cover.
But deep down? The website SheKnows notes that she fought in a 1972 storyline to go to school dressed as she pleased --- with Snoopy as her lawyer, naturally --- and played all manner of team sports at a time when it wasn't common for girls to do so. Watching my Patty from the sidelines.
