4. California – Diversity and Acceptance at Its Core
California, home to over 1.5 million LGBTQ+ adults , is a diverse state with a rich history of LGBTQ+ activism.
It was the first state to legalize same-sex marriage back in 2004. Homosexuality has been legal since 1972, equal marriage has been legal since 2013, and the use of conversion therapy on minors has been banned.
Plus, the island is a gay nomad’s dream! In August, there is the famous Provincetown Carnival, a weeklong celebration of all things queer.
Washington – A Progressive West Coast State
Washington, with 398,700 LGBTQ+ adults , is known for its progressive policies and active LGBTQ+ community. In addition, the state has had marriage equality since 2012, has legislated anti-LBGTQ bullying policies in schools, and allows for joint adoption by gay couples. It's also super gay. Local policies, pride events, and acceptance levels are improving each year.
Today, Illinois has policies that protect LGBTQ students from being bullied, promote the teaching of queer history in schools, and prevent conversion therapy from being used on minors. They both mean the same thing as far as we’re concerned!
